CF100: 2015 12 09 – Important Conversations & Forward without Fear

Each week the Orlando Sentinel asks two questions of 100 community leaders in Central Florida. Those with access to the online Sentinel can read all of this  week’s 100-word responses here. For those without access, my responses are below.

What was the biggest story of the week?

The Paris Climate talks are making real progress toward addressing the critical issues of Climate Disruption. There is not yet enough commitment but it is movement in the right direction. It is sad that this important conversation is being eclipsed by other issues. Terrorism has prevented peaceful demonstrations in the streets of Paris as well as adequate news coverage. These talks are important and we ignore them at our peril.

What will be the biggest story in the coming week?

With terrorism at many levels raising its ugly head around our nation and around our world, our president has addressed us encouraging us to move forward guided, not by our deepest fears, but rather by our highest values. Sadly, politicians on the national stage who hail from Florida are urging just the opposite. Look for this conversation to dominate our public discourse over the next week. Let us hope that voices of freedom, inclusion, and human dignity come to dominate the debate and represent not only our state but our nation.

The series focuses on state and local news.
